چکیده

Kieran Ferris / Liam Bannon Interaction Design Centre University of Limerick Ireland [email protected] [email protected] Abstract The Cardboard Box Garden (CBG) originated from a shared dissatisfaction with current computer technology as it is presented to children. This paper shall briefly review the process involved in the creation of this installation, from motivation through to design and subsequent implementation and user experiences of the CBG. Through the augmenting of an everyday artefact, namely the standard cardboard box, a simple yet powerful interactive environment that, judging from the experience of our ‘users’, has achieved its goal of stirring children’s imagination.

Challenging prior evidence for a shared syntactic processor for language and music.

A theoretical landmark in the growing literature comparing language and music is the shared syntactic integration resource hypothesis (SSIRH; e.g., Patel, 2008), which posits that the successful processing of linguistic and musical materials relies, at least partially, on the mastery of a common syntactic processor. Supporting the SSIRH, Slevc, Rosenberg, and Patel (Psychonomic Bulletin & Revie...

POWDER BOX: An Interactive Device with Sensor Based Replaceable Interface For Musical Session

In this paper, the authors introduce an interactive device, “POWDER BOX” for use by novices in musical sessions. “POWDER BOX” is equipped with sensor-based replaceable interfaces, which enable participants to discover and select their favorite playing styles of musical instruments during a musical session. In addition, it has a wireless communication function that synchronizes musical scale and...

The E-music box: an empirical method for exploring the universal capacity for musical production and for social interaction through music

Humans are assumed to have a natural-universal-predisposition for making music and for musical interaction. Research in this domain is, however, typically conducted with musically trained individuals, and therefore confounded with expertise. Here, we present a rediscovered and updated invention-the E-music box-that we establish as an empirical method to investigate musical production and intera...

Making psycholinguistics musical: self-paced reading time evidence for shared processing of linguistic and musical syntax.

Linguistic processing, especially syntactic processing, is often considered a hallmark of human cognition; thus, the domain specificity or domain generality of syntactic processing has attracted considerable debate. The present experiments address this issue by simultaneously manipulating syntactic processing demands in language and music. Participants performed self-paced reading of garden pat...

Rhythmic Effects of Syntax Processing in Music and Language

Music and language are human cognitive and neural functions that share many structural similarities. Past theories posit a sharing of neural resources between syntax processing in music and language (Patel, 2003), and a dynamic attention network that governs general temporal processing (Large and Jones, 1999). Both make predictions about music and language processing over time. Experiment 1 of ...
